Gaze Machines & Places of Curiosity
In the Otherminds studio at İstanbul Technical University in 2013, students built full-scale viewing devices and models of imagined topographies. One group used recycled bottles to alter viewers’ perception of their surroundings. Aydemir examined how students developed ideas through bodily experience, narrative, making and representation in the first action cycle of her doctoral research.

Kokumi: representing proposals through experience
In the Kokumi master’s studio at KU Leuven in autumn 2015, students developed urban and architectural proposals for Brussels’ Liedtsplein. Team Taste presented its proposal through a staged eating experience; team Kokumi Attack organised an exhibition. Aydemir studied how alternative representations and changes to studio organisation influenced students’ design processes, using design diaries, observation and a questionnaire.
Student proposals and presentations: teams Taste and Kokumi Attack. Thesis, figures 3.25–3.26, p. 86; research context and findings, pp. 80–89.
